With the continuation of retro cars making a comeback and garnering much-deserved attention, Ford is rumored to be working on a competitor to a future Chevrolet Chevelle—the Ford Torino Shelby GT. Even if Chevrolet weren’t to bring back the Chevelle, the Torino Shelby GT will become a worthy competitor to the SS. The Torino is one the most iconic muscle cars to wear the Blue Oval badge, and a modern interpretation of the classic would fit perfectly into the fray of modern muscle with classic heritage.

While Ford has not released any specs or information on the 2016 Torino, we can expect to see the vehicle have an aggressive look that hints towards its performance. Thanks to an aluminum-based body, the Torino Shelby GT will have a lightweight design that puts an emphasis on performance. However, it’s unlikely that Ford will stray away from its muscular design that can be found on the rest of its lineup, while maintaining a familiar shape to the classic Torino.

The interior of the Torino Shelby GT is still a mystery as the majority of specs that have been released are concerned with its design and performance. With safety becoming even more important for cars, the upcoming Torino’s interior will have a performance-oriented feel, but will be dictated by safety features and comfort.

The juicy, and arguably the most interesting, part of the Torino will surely be its powertrain, which has to be powerful enough to make it a competitor to the muscle cars on the market. While it’s any guess what kind of performance specs the Torino will have, a good guess would be the 5.0-L V8 out of the Ford Mustang GT. Its V8 engine puts out 435 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque, which is more than enough to make it a proper competitor in the muscle car segment.

The 2016 Torino Shelby GT could possibly receive the motor out of the formidable Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, which is a 5.2-L V8 that puts out 526 hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. With either engine, the Torino should be able to reach 60 mph in four seconds and have a top speed in the neighborhood of 170 mph.

The Torino is projected to make its debut on the Australian market in 2016, while a U.S. release will follow shortly.

The 2016 Ford Torino Shelby GT Is a Chevrolet SS Executioner

There’s no denying the fact that the 2016 Ford Torino Shelby GT is aimed directly at the Chevrolet SS. With a 6.2-L V8 engine that puts out 415 hp and 415 lb.-ft. of torque, the SS is capable of getting to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. With its light weight body and 5.0-L V8 engine out of the Mustang, the Torino has the upper hand when it comes to performance specs with a quicker time to 60 mph.

With the even more powerful 5.2-L V8 engine out of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, the Torino Shelby GT will decimate the SS in performance and will surely be a thrill to drive. At County Ford in Graham, North Carolina, we’re thrilled at the prospect of a Torino.
